1987 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe

“The answer, since 1953, to America's demand for a native sports car was and is the Corvette. To quality for this lofty position, the Corvette had to be, and not be, many things. It could not be a mere badge of the wealthy, so capricious it required the constant attention of a mechanic to keep it running. Rather, it had to encourage sports car driving as an everyday habit.” Part of the longer essay that fronts the '87 Corvette sales brochure.

For consignment, a 1987 Chevrolet Corvette coupe with a title verified 37,165 actual miles. They made more than 20,000 coupes in '87 but how many one owner, garage kept examples are left? Well, this is one of them.

Exterior
his knight in shining armor wears a coat of Black paint on its C4 profile, the Vette long nose and short tail, still squared off in '87 with inset tail lights and black side molding that encircles the car, including that back fascia. In later years, the nose too would be rounded off but the original C4 had the inset marker lights under the same glass as the foglights. A third brake like perches above the curved rear window and fender vents compete with the words Tuned Port Injection for your attention. Out back, bevel cut chrome tips add a bit of mirrored shine to the car while the 16-inch wheels, know in the Vette world as salad shooters, retain their aluminum alloy finish. A red and white pinstripe on the shoulder finishes the car on which the only imperfections are some chin scrapes, specifically on the hood hinge bottoms.

Interior
Silver door panels share the space with gray carpeted lowers and black plastic hardware and speaker and both doors present nicely. There's some slight wear and compression on the driver's silver leather bucket seats while the passenger's shows none. The fat steering wheel ahead leads to the digital dash ahead with lightbars indicating speed and RPMs in what today might look like an 80's arcade game but in the day, was revolutionary. Clean and black is the center stack with information center, indicator light panel, Delco AM/FM/Cassette radio, and the push button A/C panel. A wide center console holds the shifter towards the driver, puts seat controls in a cove and window switches on the surface and it presents as evidence of a low mileage car. A removable targa top stows in the back while gray carpet cleanly covers all floor surfaces.

Drivetrain
Clean too is the 350ci L98 V8 under the hood, rated at 240 horsepower and electronically fuel injected. It's backed by a 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the rear axle with 2.59 gears and Positraction.

Undercarriage
Remarkable clean and dry underneath with dual exhaust that run through stock style mufflers before exiting through four chrome tips. Power disc brakes are at all four corners of course and suspension consists of transverse monoleaf springs and aluminum control arms to save weight and keep the front and rear independent.

Drive-Ability
The comfortable and low sitting position of the Corvette gives you that race car feeling like few cars on the road. The low mileage 350 comes to life and a healthy exhaust note is emitted, but tame enough for daily use to be sure. The car accelerates with torque filled goodness and handles like its on rails. They never cease to be fun! Everything is working in this black beauty and we place it under the lights and wait for the next lucky owner to spot it. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

They're still out there. Low mileage, one owner pampered C4s and if there's an easier way to get into the specialty car hobby, we can't think of it. This is not a rare car but it is a rare opportunity. This one comes with a solid top and a clear top, so you actually have three cars in one!
