1970 Chevrolet Malibu Chevelle SS Tribute

“The hardest thing about owning a Chevelle is making up your mind which model best fits the bill. To help get you off the horns of this dilemma, here are some facts which hopefully should lead to a decision. There are four Malibu models to choose from: sport coupe, sports sedan, convertible, and 4 door sedan. The 1970 Chevelle by Chevrolet, the performance starts as soon as you're seated!” From the 1970 brochure.

For consignment, a 1970 Chevrolet Malibu Chevelle SS tribute with a title verified 47,017 actual miles. This tribute was born as a sport coupe but it went to the gym and now wears muscle in the form of cosmetic and mechanical enhancements.

Exterior
t may have left the 98 pound weakling behind, the was resprayed in the original color, Fathom Blue, now in two stages, with white SS stripes over the cowl hood and decklid. Think of it as a tank top that accentuates muscular shoulders, with biceps in the shape of 15-inch Crager SS wheels with staggered width tires that have an early 2021 date code. The back is perhaps the most muscular part of the car with those fat meats, wide tail lights that mean business, and dual exhaust tips flexing to make their presence known. Hood pins, SS badges, and of course, the power bulge of the cowl hood all represent up front, and it's all well done with the only imperfection being a marker light tweaked out of position and a linear scratch.

Interior
If you're going to be fit, you better take care of your insides too and this car starts out with well toned black vinyl door panels that open up to tall bucket seats in excellent condition with subtle weave patterned stripes and the rear seats mirror condition and material. A standard stock steering wheel leads to a black plastic dash panel housing silver rimmed gauges with the typical slight haze of the plexiglass but fully intact and clean. An AM radio is accompanied by some added gauges below and a Holley Sniper EFI screen, none of which deters from the overall originality. The Sidewinder shifter, however, replaces a factory piece and stands tall over the black carpet below. A black headliner is above us, complete with shoulder belts tucked in and the trunk is barren with a fitted vinyl mat.

Drivetrain
The transplanted heart of this athlete is a 540ci V8 with Brodix heads, Holley Sniper electronic fuel injection, an Edelbrock Victor Jr. intake, and a consignor stated 600 horsepower. It's mated to a TH400 3-speed automatic that routes power to a 12 bolt rear with 3.73 gears and Positraction. It's important to exhale properly when you work out, so coated headers are onboard to start the process.

Undercarriage
Fantastically clean underneath with just a tad of oil on the pans and some drift, but otherwise dry and rust free. The dual exhaust runs through FlowMaster mufflers, loops over the rear axle, flanking the chrome differential cover before exiting via chrome tips. Power brakes are here with Wilwood discs in front and drums in the rear. Suspension consists of coil springs all around with a 4 link in back.

Drive-Ability
We fire this gym rat up and she lets out a grunt from the exhaust that would get you kicked out of Planet Fitness, but around here, we welcome it. We roll this Fathom Blue beauty onto the test loop to do a few laps, you know, get our cardio in, and the car performs as good as it looks with good power, straight tracking, sharp handling, and braking on demand. How about another set? No, our workout is over and it's time to get back to our desk job. Meanwhile, we note the clock and front turn signals are not working and the cowl induction flap will not close. Beyond that, this fit Malibu is ready to kick some sand out on the streets! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

Well sorted, outrageous power, and electronics now pumping the lifeblood of this Chevelle, the full body scan tells the story of a healthy car going full beast mode. There's no soy here, it's all meat eating protein, good looks, and a decent spinning back kick to add a bit of muscle to your garage. You may be out of shape, but take a seat in this ride, and you're suddenly Mr./Mrs. Olympia!
