1969 Chevrolet Malibu Chevelle Hardtop

“Putting you first keeps us first. Say you set out to build the perfect mid size car. You'd probably come to the same decisions we did for the 1969 Chevelle. In a sense, you did build this car. The features you'll read about in this brochure exist only because someone like you asked for them.” From the 1969 Chevelle sales brochure.

For consignment, a 1969 Chevrolet Malibue Chevelle hardtop showing 7,086 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This veteran of the Atco Raceway has some bumps and bruises but don't completely judge a book by its cover, this one has a clean 350ci V8 under the hood and a modified turbo hydramatic behind it!

Exterior
Here we have a combination of satin black, bare metal, and all kinds of patina and body work. Richard Rawlings might call this one rougher than a stucco bathtub, but maybe it's not that bad! There are areas where filler has been sanded down, exposing the red primer below and it shows a kind of patina people will purposely paint on their car. The roof is bare and there's quite a bit of rust through on the C-pillar and a gaping hole in the passenger's fender. That's what Derek from Vice Grip Garage would call weight saving. There's rust on the latch panel as well. For shoes, we have Jegs Sport Star wheels, 17-inch front and 15-inch rears and a modern touch is added with LED lights up front along with some old school hood pins.

Interior
The door panel on the driver's side is a remnant of the original Chevelle while missing on the passenger side, opening up to the full roll cage inside lined up next to the racing bucket seats in black vinyl. Up front, the steering wheel shows some age and a big AutoMeter tachometer and shift light is to the left while the standard instrument cluster is ahead of us. The center stack is full of component delete gaps with three gauges of different brands filling some holes, and a Hurst Quarter stick is on the floor with no fancy base or boot, over black loop carpet. More weight saving above as there is no headliner and the trunk holds the fuel cell and battery.

Drivetrain
According to our consignor, the 350ci V8 under the hood has been detuned for the street and receives gas from a Holley 4-barrel. It's mated to a modified TH350 3-speed automatic that sends power to the Ford 9” in back with 3.73 gears. We have headers on board and they can be seen from the side as there are no wheel wells in this former ¼ mile ripper.

Undercarriage
What you might expect from an old racer, some typical surface rust, some custom cuts, extra braces, and a bit of oil on the pan. Disc brakes are at the front wheel and drums in back. Dual exhaust runs from the headers and runs fully intact to exit just behind the rear wheels. Suspension consists of coil springs up front and ladder bars and coilovers in the back

Drive-Ability
She sounds better than she looks and we move the raw shifter into Drive and lap the test loop where the car provides good power, straight tracking, and decent handling. The wipers were removed and we note the speedometer and odometer are not working. All other functions on this former drag racer operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

Maybe you saw this car run at Atco back in the day. Perhaps you have ideas on how to bring it back to its former glory. Maybe you're just looking for a Chevelle race car project. Lots of potential with this one but whatever you do, preserve that 1991 Atco inspection sticker on the roll cage. That's vintage too!
