1967 Austin Healey 3000 MKIII Roadster

“In 1958, through the efforts of Clyde Anderson and Jim Engle, word spread around the Chicago area that an Austin Healey Club would be formed as a regional club AHCA founders. A committee wrote preliminary bylaws and addressed other matters in preparation for a March 1961 meeting, at which officers were elected and the Club was given the go ahead to begin incorporation of the Midwest regional club. Since 1976, an annual Conclave has been hosted as the signature national event of the AHCA. This annual celebration is like a family reunion with an average attendance of nearly 600 Healey fans and more than 200 Healeys.” Thx healeyclub.org

For consignment, a 1967 Austin Healey 3000 MK III roadster showing 46,031 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This is a proper British sports car into which our consignor has poured more than $30,000 worth of improvements, creating a well sorted and beautifully presented Austin Healey.

Exterior
No guessing the color here, it's British Racing Green, of course and it looks right and fitting for this car. An oval grille is augmented by a front facing scoop, sculpted into the hood between the headlights that ride the end of rounded fenders. A curvaceous boot at the other end is flanked by stacked round lights and reflectors on the fine chrome bumper. In profile, it can only be described as sensuous as the long front fenders melt into the shoulder line of the door then rises gently to arch over the rear wheel, finally descending to a rounded tail. Polished trim on the door meets an upright windscreen bookended by side mirrors, all over 15-inch knock off wire wheels. Top up reveals a black canvas cover in nice condition. Some bubbling on the rocker panel is the only imperfection on this tasty roadster.

Interior
Simple black vinyl door panels greet driver and navigator alike, with some slight patina on the driver's map pocket, but otherwise clean and fully intact. Bomber style black vinyl buckets await in handsome stitching and textured backing, robust and lined with white piping and seat pads on the back match the pattern. A wood rimmed sport steering wheel invites the driver to play and it fronts a polished burlwood dash housing the ever important tachometer and speedometer along with a water temperature gauge and oil pressure gauge sharing a circle. The center stack, backed in black plastic, shows a touch of age and houses vent controls, a metal plated switchgear panel, a speaker, and the AM radio. Wood returns on the passenger side and like a fine cabinet, makes up the construction of the glove box door. The center console is another open invitation to the driver, presenting a tall shifter with its ball handle in a silver rimmed plastic base. Black carpet is at our feet and the boot has the protection of a mat while housing a spare wire wheel, tool, jack, and battery.

Drivetrain
An olive green valve cover dominates the clean, drive quality engine bay under the bonnet, a 177.7ci inline six cylinder, rated at 150 horsepower and fueled by 2 HD8 Su carburetors. A 4-speed manual transmission with Laycock-de-Normanville overdrive backs up the power plant and routes power to 3.909 gears in the rear axle. Disc brakes are employed up front and drum brakes are found in the back.

Undercarriage
Driver quality underneath as well with a generous coating of oil on the X-frame and surrounding components. The good news is there's almost no surface rust to speak of. Dual exhaust, much of which is colored by that surface rust, runs in tandem through stock style mufflers and clean resonators before exiting via clean tailpipes. Coil spring suspension is noted up front with leaf springs in the back.

Drive-Ability
Compact, comfortable, and capable is how we would describe experiencing a well sorted and well running Austin Healey. Great sound from the exhaust and peppy acceleration is at hand, and other than the trip odometer, all functions work on this British classic. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

This takes British sports cars to the next level and with excellent tracking and nimble handling, it's a car you'll want to drive all day, every day. Though not built specifically for racing, the racing influence is heavy here and results in a car that is fun to drive and easy on the eyes. Grab your driving gloves and best mate, twisty roads and club events await.
