1947 F1 Pickup

Lots of changes were going on at Ford post war. There was a concerted effort to make the trucks more comfortable and usable for various applications. A new frame, new suspension and a completely reworked cab were in development and introduced in late 1947 for 1948 release. Prior to these major changes though, the trucks in 1947 were essentially the same models produced prior to the war.

For consignment, a 1947 Ford F1 pickup showing 10,251 miles, but the true miles are unknown. Six inches make a big difference, (or so they say), and this hulking F1 street rod has had its cab widened and lengthened by six inches, and the doors were extended six inches. The truck has earned a room full of trophies and will come to you with a stack of build receipts.

Exterior
This once upright work truck is now a low slung street machine and the distinctive vertical grille can be mistaken for no other truck, now nearly skimming the road ahead. After the stance drops your jaw, the paint is next, a two stage covering of a medium green that is show ready with its nosed hood, shaved doors and beautifully trimmed side vents. Then the wheels grab you, at least that which is visible under the slammed fenders, 15-inch Billet Specialties Vintec P589's with deeply staggered tire widths, tucking 285/70R15's in back. Stainless hardware now holds the tailgate while teardrop tail lights hug the rear fenders, flanking the FORD embossed gate, all in monochromatic medium green. The tan canvas tonneau is controlled electronically and covers a spectacular bed covered in amber wood planks and stainless rails. We talked about that low chin, and indeed, the only imperfections are scrapes on the underside of the front.

Interior
Style and taste are subjective of course, but we think the interior is objectively handsome, starting with the ivory colored leather door panels with brown velour inserts and a gold trim line and billet hardware. Small brown inserts also accent the leather bucket seats and colors are well coordinated with the dash, beginning with the wood rimmed steering wheel on a polished column, glossy wood dash plate, and gold rimmed, ivory faced VDO gauges lined uniformly over billet knobs. The sidewalls continue the pattern of the doors, including the gold trim and the floor is covered in clean woven tan covers with leather trim. A Lokar shifter is floor mounted cleanly dressed in a tan leather boot and polished trim plate.

Drivetrain
The mirrored firewall creates a show ready engine bay and the star of the show is a 350ci ZZ4 V8 crate engine with a new Holley 4-barrel carb topped by a reflective air cleaner element cover. The shiny motor is backed by a 700R4 4-speed automatic sending power to the Ford 9” in the back. Power brakes are onboard as front discs and rear drums while headers begin the exhaust process.

Undercarriage
You know things are good when dust is the biggest issue on the underside! It's clean and other than some typical surface rust, unmarred. The custom frame is linked to a Mustang II front end with coil overs and leaf springs in the back. Dual exhaust travels through glasspack style mufflers, then turns east and west to exit in front of the rear wheels.

Drive-Ability
On our regrettably short drive, we note the engine missing badly and struggling to accelerate. We were able to test functions and note the A/C is not working but all other operational items on the truck pass the test! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

This is a visually spectacular show truck that has many more trophies in its future. Once you get the stutter worked out, the sky's the limit for this near flawless '47. The body has been trimmed and chopped 6 inches in some places, and four inches in others. But it's still an above average build and proves once and for all, size doesn't matter, it's all about execution.
