Some cars pay homage to a classic, and others redefine it. This 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback is the latter, a modernized take on the legendary Bullitt Mustang, built with precision and an eye for detail by Boyce Customs. The entire project was driven by a vision: retain the Mustang's iconic presence while incorporating modern performance, handling, and aesthetics. Over the course of nearly two years and 2,300 labor hours, this dream took shape, transforming an aging pony car into a masterpiece coated in Audi's striking Sonoma Green.
Starting with a GT-equipped car, the restoration began in 2018 with an extensive teardown, removing the front clip, firewall, floor, rear quarter panels, inner and outer wheel wells, trunk floor, and chassis rails. A new foundation was laid using Mustangs To Fear's full front subframe, complete with a radiator support, smooth engine bay panels, front suspension, steering, brakes, and a transmission crossmember. All evidence of age was replaced with high quality Dynacorn sheet metal, sourced from CJ Pony Parts, while original OEM components were either repaired or tracked down. And a modern Mustang "Coyote" emblem was placed on the front grille, the only callout to what powers this pony.
Once the drivetrain and suspension were mocked up, the car was mounted on a rotisserie for underside and engine bay prep. Aiming for a unique yet classic look, multiple color samples were tested. Initially considering Dark Highland Green, the builder ultimately chose Audi's Sonoma Green, a shade that added a modern edge to the Bullitt theme.
Powering this beast is a Ford Gen 1 Coyote engine, perfectly nestled in the bay thanks to the Mustangs To Fear front end and removal of the factory strut towers. A custom-tune and a free-flowing exhaust—featuring custom stainless headers, a 2.5-inch stainless exhaust system, and MagnaFlow mufflers—ensure the Coyote delivers ample performance. Cooling duties are handled by an aluminum radiator with twin thermo fans, while air conditioning and hydraulic power steering make it a livable, high-performance machine. And a Tremec T56 six-speed manual transmission, paired with a Spec Stage 2 10.5-inch clutch, puts power to the ground via a Ford 8.8-inch rear end.
Handling was a major focus, leading to significant suspension upgrades. The front end features a Mustangs To Fear subframe with QA1 coil-overs, while the outdated leaf-spring rear suspension was swapped for an AJE triangulated four-link system with Viking coil-overs and custom adjustable control arms. Stopping power is provided by Wilwood six-piston calipers and discs up front, while SVT Cobra discs handle braking in the rear. Rolling stock consists of US Mags Rambler wheels, 17x7 up front and 17x9 in the rear, wrapped in BFGoodrich g-Force Sport Comp 2 tires.
The Mustang's cabin retains its classic charm while integrating subtle modern upgrades. TMI Sport-R front seats and a reupholstered rear bench offer improved comfort and support. The dashboard was fitted with a Classic Instruments AutoCross-series cluster, while a Shelby-style wood and aluminum steering wheel adds a period-correct touch. A custom TMI center console with a bespoke shift boot and bezel completes the driver-focused layout. For a refined and cohesive look, a Mustangs To Fear one-piece molded headliner was installed. The trunk received a Mustangs To Fear molded interior kit, while the interior panels were meticulously sandblasted and refinished in semi-gloss black. The finishing touches included fresh glass installed by Route 11 Glass Plus, polished original stainless trim, and all-new weather stripping.
Blending vintage soul with modern performance, this Bullitt-inspired Mustang is far more than a simple tribute—it's a complete reimagining of an icon. With its Coyote powerplant, high-performance underpinnings, and tastefully updated interior, it offers the best of both worlds: classic Mustang aesthetics with contemporary performance and reliability. Built with meticulous attention to detail and an uncompromising vision, this Mustang is a true masterpiece, ready to turn heads and tear up the pavement.
